Rising Risk Of Chronic Kidney Disease: Early Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

By Dr Chen Kah Khin, Consultant Internal Medicine (Physician) & Nephrologist, Hospital Seri Botani

Chronic Kidney Disease is getting more common in Malaysia and worldwide. It is estimated that one in 7 Malaysians suffer from chronic kidney disease. CKD develops silently without obvious symptoms until both kidneys are significantly damaged.

Why CKD is on the rise?

Diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure) are the two most common causes of kidney failure. Poorly controlled blood sugar and blood pressure can damage the kidneys over time.

Who Is Most at Risk?

You should be screened for CKD at least once a year if you have:

• Diabetes

• Hypertension

• Family history of kidney disease

• Heart disease

• Obesity

• History of long-term painkiller use

• Age above 60

Early Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

Kidney disease rarely causes symptoms in the early stages. However, the following signs should prompt you to seek medical evaluation:

1. Foamy or Bubbly Urine

  • This may indicate protein in urine

2. Swelling of Legs, Ankles, or Eye Lids

  • Fluid retention occurs when the kidneys cannot regulate salt and water effectively

3. Loss of Appetite, Nausea, or Metallic Taste

  • Waste products that accumulate in the blood can affect appetite and digestion

4. Persistent fatigue

  • Due to low red blood cells and toxin build up

How to detect CKD

  • Blood test for kidney function
  • Urine test for protein in urine

Take Action Early!

CKD is silent, however early treatment can stop or slow kidney damage.
